Contemporary critical responses to The Terminator were mixed.[4] Variety praised the film, calling it a "blazing, cinematic comic book, full of virtuoso moviemaking, terrific momentum, solid performances and a compelling story ... Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast in a machine-like portrayal that requires only a few lines of dialog."[69] Richard Corliss of Time magazine said that the film had "plenty of tech-noir savvy to keep infidels and action fans satisfied."[70] Time placed The Terminator on its "10 Best" list for 1984.[65]
In October 1997, the rights to future Terminator films were auctioned to Vajna for $8 million.[31] Hurd had opposed Vajna's attempt to buy the rights, and had tried unsuccessfully to change Cameron's mind about purchasing the rights.[32] On the night that the rights were auctioned, Vajna contacted Cameron and Schwarzenegger to resolve the situation. Vajna was surprised that Cameron would be upset about the rights being sold, later saying, "What difference does it make to Jim who's financing the movie, a studio or us? His deal would have been the same. Arnold tried to convince Jim over a long period of time to do the film. Arnold felt very loyal."[8] Vajna said that Cameron "felt that we 'stole his baby', even though we're the ones who put it together last time round. So we felt that that was kind of strange and then we went on to do it ourselves."[26]

Meanwhile, the T-800's belligerent-jock behaviour is mitigated only by fealty to the needs of a child. Cameron is determined to make this a movie about mothers and fathers, and Schwarzenegger's big daddy is the sole character with real growth. (Basically: #notallterminators.) As sad robots go, this one's screen demise falls short of Roy Batty's "Tears in Rain" speech in pathos but greatly exceeds it in corniness. The last we see of him, he's being lowered into a pool of molten lava, giving the thumbs-up as he disappears under the blazing orange surface. The T-800 isn't (just) an übermensch. He's Big Jesus with big guns, heaven-sent, sacrificing himself to balance out all the failure and inadequacies of mankind--a cartoonish exaggeration of Reagan-Bush era masculine ideals presented as tear-jerking religious allegory. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a master class in action direction, yes, but it's so efficient and tense that its tone remains oppressive throughout--relentless, aggressive, self-satisfied--and its main characters are assholes. Like a Terminator, it's a little hard to love.
