The mascot of the PHP project is the elePHPant, a blue elephant with the PHP logo on its side, designed by Vincent Pontier[189] in 1998.[190] "The (PHP) letters were forming the shape of an elephant if viewed in a sideways angle."[191] The elePHPant is sometimes differently colored when in plush toy form.

Many variations of this mascot have been made over the years. Only the elePHPants based on the original design by Vincent Pontier are considered official by the community.[192] These are collectible and some of them are extremely rare.[193]

Implied type conversions that result in different values being treated as equal, sometimes against the programmer's intent, can lead to security issues. For example, the result of the comparison '0e1234' == '0' is true, because strings that are parsable as numbers are converted to numbers; in this case, the first compared value is treated as scientific notation having the value (0101234), which is zero. Errors like this resulted in authentication vulnerabilities in Simple Machines Forum,[299] Typo3[300] and phpBB[301] when MD5 password hashes were compared. The recommended way is to use hash_equals() (for timing attack safety), strcmp or the identity operator (===), as '0e1234' === '0' results in false.[302]

After working with a third party school logo designer to create two options, the Student Advisory Council helped share the proposed mascot with their peers. Students at both the middle and elementary schools were able to vote for their favorite design, and the winner was announced to the entire student body on Monday following a presentation by the Student Advisory Council.

The group Coloradoans Against Ethnic Stereotyping in ColoradoSchools (CAECS), part of a Greeley-based group that includes abasketball team with the mascot "Fighting Whities," is working tobring awareness to an issue members say helps perpetuatestereotyped views of Native Americans.

Jack Garrison is one of those who would prefer to keep thattradition intact. The Montrose High wrestling coach and 1977 MHSgraduate does not believe the mascot or school logo, which depictsan Indian in headdress, are intended to be derogatory.

"I am kind of sentimental about the Indians because I grew upthat way," Garrison said. "I wouldn't want to change it. It is notintended to put the Native Americans down, it is a good traditionand I think we ought to look at it that way. We took it as a mascotbecause of the area and because of the Utes."

Montrose will be contacted about changing its high schoolmascot, said Special Education Professor Francie Murry of theUniversity of Northern Colorado, one of those organizing thegrassroots awareness campaign.

"Yes, we will contact them," Murry said. "Historically, you haveto look at why there is not a large Native American population inMontrose, and yet you decide to honor them with a mascot? What isthe honor? That they don't exist there? Any kind of mascot or iconreflecting a school that is predominantly Anglo is pejorative inthe sense that it changes history."

"It wasn't necessarily the name, but the name in combinationwith the caricature that they use," said VanLoo, who is of Lebaneseand Dutch descent. "The group did research and looked historicallyat the region and the state. They looked at other districts acrossthe country that have successfully changed mascots. When theyfinally met with the Eaton school board, though, the board saidthey were not going to deal with the issue. They (CAECS) played bythe rules, and followed protocol, but they were not invited to thetable."

"We decided to use irony to make our point," he said. "We chosea name and a mascot that paralleled what was happening in Eaton asclosely as we could. They are the Reds and they use the image of aNative American. They said that the image is brave and strong, andfull of pride and integrity. We could say the same thing about ourcharacter; he is a very successful businessman in a suit and tie.He could make a lot of money."
